Celebrating Place, Cultivating Resilience

Laura Lengnick, Foragable Community’s Resilience Partner, led a workshop entitled Celebrating Place, Cultivating Resilience at this year’s Extension Master Gardener College hosted by North Carolina State University in Raleigh  June 7.   Laura introduced community resilience concepts using examples from our Foragable Morganton and Foragable Durham programs and led several exercises to give workshop participants a chance to apply resilience thinking to some of their favorite foods.

The Extension Master Gardener College is a biennial conference that offers Master Gardeners advanced educational opportunities that they need to maintain their certification.  Participants in this year’s college could chose from more than 30 different workshops and tours on a diversity of subjects such as composting and vermiculture, gardening with natives, fire resistant landscaping, and growing grapes in North Carolina.  Since 1979, NC Cooperative Extension has recruited, trained and engaged local residents to serve as Master Gardener volunteers who expand Extension’s capacity to meet the needs of the gardening public.  Today, there are over 3,500 volunteers in 84 counties across the state.
